Say behind é uma peça raríssima entre as coleções intermináveis de phrasal verbs: um verbo que realmente diz o que parece dizer.
Isso mesmo: stay behind significa “ficar para trás”. Só isso, e nada mais. Milagre, não?
Mas note que stay behind não significa qualquer “ficar para trás”. Por exemplo, se você quer dizer que alguém está “ficando para trás” numa corrida ou competição, o correto seria usar fall behind (que literalmente quer dizer “cair para trás”).
Stay behind significa simplesmente que você fica num local enquanto o resto ou a maioria da sua companhia atual vai para algum outro lugar. Assim, às vezes podemos traduzir fall behind simplesmente como “ficar”.
