Pois bem, to get the wrong end of the stick significa algo bem diferente: “entender errado”, ou “confundir-se”.
Pois é, amigos, o inglês é cheio de surpresas e você nunca para de aprender. Eu, diga-se de passagem, descobri essa diferença hoje, ao preparar o artigo…
E como não confundir entre essas duas expressões, então? Bom, se você lembra, a nossa teoria era de que to get the short end of the stick vem daquele joguinho de decisão tipo cara ou coroa, ou par ou ímpar. Pensando no joguinho, fica claro como get the short end significa “sair perdendo”. Já no caso de get the wrong end of the stick, pense no cara que pega um bastão de caminhada (walking stick) pela ponta errada — e descobre que ela está suja de algo feio que o cachorro do vizinho fez.
