Hoje veremos como dizer “pegar pela mão” em inglês. Essa expressão tem um sentido literal e um figurado, como sabemos. O literal é “pegar alguém pela mão” fisicamente. O figurado é “dar orientações para que alguém faça algo”; é costume dizer-se, por exemplo, “tenho que pegar na sua mão para tudo!”.
Mas como dizer isso em inglês?
Existem dois equivalentes de “pegar pela mão” em inglẽs: take by the hand e take in hand. Palavra por palavra, o primeiro significa “pegar em a mão” e o segundo é “tomar em mão”.
Há uma diferença de uso entre essas expressões. Take by the hand é quase sempre usada literalmente e take in hand é quase sempre usada no figurado, segundo a distinção que vimos no início.

2 – Agora, confira exemplos de take in hand, que é geralmente “orientar alguém”, “assumir o comando/responsabilidade por alguém”:
The matter was taken in hand by the director himself.
O assunto passou a ser orientado pelo diretor em pessoa.
That child needs taking in hand, if you ask me.
Aquela criança precisa de receber orientação, na minha opinião.
(“[…] if you ask me” é literalmente “se você me perguntar”, porém equivale a “na minha opinião” mesmo.)
He took her in hand and began helping her understand her coursework.
Ele pegou-a pela mão e começou a ajudá-la a entender seu trabalho acadêmico.
Someone is going to have to take Tim in hand and help him out.
Alguém vai ter que pegar o Tim pela mão e ajudá-lo.
Alice decided that she would take the new worker in hand.
Alice decidiu que ela iria pegar o novo trabalhador pela mão.
Once the new teacher takes them in hand this class will do much better.
Uma vez que o novo professor assumir o comando deles, esta turma vai desempenhar muito melhor.
(“[…] do much better” é literalmente “fazer muito melhor”.)
That child is very badly behaved; someone should take her in hand.
Aquela criança é muito mal comportada; alguém deveria assumir o controle dela.
The new manager hopes to take the organization in hand.
O novo gerente espera assumir o comando da nova organização.
